My latest anthology is just newly released into the world, spreading its fledgling wings and hopefully finding its way into the libraries of those people who will appreciate it. While it does that, its successor is almost ready to open to submissions.
I love using Submittable to manage my submissions, but the last couple times I did it the response from writers was so incredible that it actually broke Submittable because it put me over the number of submissions I’m allowed to receive in a month. Which is *awesome* but I want to see if we can avoid breaking it again because that just causes unnecessary stress for all of us.
So, with that in mind I’ve decided to extend the deadline for submissions to Hauntings and Hoarfrost to October 7th.
The largest number of submissions to any anthology come in the last week, and Submittable resets my allowed number of submissions at the end of each calendar month. I am hoping that by pushing the deadline into a new calendar month we will be able to avoid hitting the ceiling.
We’ll see how it goes.
TL;DR — Submissions will still open on September 1st but now they won’t close until October 7th.
I can not wait to read your work 🙂
I’ll repost the guidelines below. Just because 🙂
Hauntings and Hoarfrost
Gothic fiction is renowned for being filled with spine-chilling stories in isolated and forlorn places. What better setting could there be than the deep, dark, depths of winter? When snow and storms can isolate remote locations for days or weeks and bundling up to keep the cold away provides a different kind of anonymity and isolation even in the heart of cities.
Hauntings and Hoarfrost will be filled with stories of frosty mornings, blood stained snow and ghosts who appear and disappear like breath fogging the air. I will be looking for mysterious messages scratched into frosty windows, the sound of ice skates cutting across an empty pond, wild storms and blankets of soft, white, beautiful death.

Hi, I’m a Canadian now living in California, and I’ve written a series of stories set in a fictional Ottawa valley town called Kitchissippi (I’ve sold three of them so far). I know this is pushing way beyond your limits, but would you consider a story that comes in at 10,000 words? It’s a quaint tale of a boy who falls in love with a new girl in his high school, and the it ends in blood and horror on a frigid winter night. There’s some extremely disturbing imagery, but nothing graphic for the sake of being graphic. Let me know if you would consider taking a look at this story, and I will send it off to you. It is called the Lipman strain. Thank you.
Hi John!
I would be willing to give this a read, but it would be a very hard sell. I have a limited number of words I can include in this anthology so a 10k word story would, essentially, have to be twice as good as a 5k word story in order to be accepted.
But the worst I can say is no, so if you think it will win me over, feel free to submit it and mention in your cover letter that I said as much 😉
Hi Rhonda. My name is Joy. I came across this offer and I have paid vivid attention to your requirement. I am a fictional ghostwriter. I have quite an experience in twisting plots. I have written several romance novels and I think I can up with something great on blood, horror, and winter nights.
Would you like to take a look at my write-up?
Hi Joy. If you have a short story you would like to submit the link is here –> https://niteblade.submittable.com/submit 🙂
