Over the course of this fundraiser I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on some of the creators who have signed up for this year’s Giftmas Create-A-Thon. I think it’s really easy to get caught up in the numbers of, like, how many donations, and how much money is raised — and obviously that is important. But it’s also really important to celebrate the people who have signed up to participate in this fundraiser in an attempt to leave the world better than they found it.
Today is the final spotlight and it is on Cassandra Weir.

What made you sign-up for the Create-A-Thon?
For longer than I want to think about, I’ve dedicated November to writing, as part of a worldwide challenge. Despite the difficulties that challenge has gone through, I knew there was no way I wasn’t going to be writing in November. So, I needed to rethink what November would look like for me. It was clear that it wasn’t going to be the same as always. When I saw a call for the Create-A-Thon, it seemed like a good way to use something that I would be doing anyway to benefit other people.
Can you tell us a bit about your goal?Â
I got an idea for a story back in September or so and decided to save it for November. However, my plan had been to just work on that idea in November. Unfortunately for my wrists, I didn’t finish the current draft of the other novel I was working on. And there was a short story I was working on that was going to bleed into November as well. I decided to keep my goal to a slightly more reasonable size and go for the more traditional 50,000 words towards the new novel idea in November. Unofficially, I also wanted to finish the other novel draft and the short story.
What is your favourite (or least favourite) thing about the month of November?
I have a couple of writing communities I belong to, and November is when a lot more people are writing, so it feels less lonely to sit in a room and write by myself.
Not only that, but even though the sun goes down way earlier and the temperatures start to drop and there may or may not be snow, a lot of the houses in my neighbourhood put up lights on their house. The decorations and lights are really cheerful and help to push away the darkness.
What book do you wish you could read again for the first time?
Oh gosh, I’m sure I could name a ton of them. There are so many that I read as a kid, from the Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce to an R.L. Stine book that I can clearly remember the cover for but can’t remember the name. However, out of books I’ve recently read, I think it would be House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune.
Is a hot dog a sandwich?
That’s a trap.
