I is for Ice and Frost

Isn’t it weird how some words sound ‘wrong’ when they follow one another in the wrong order? To my ear ‘frost and ice’ sounds fine, but ‘ice and frost’ is off somehow. Still, it has to be Ice and Frost to fit the alphabet theme, so there you go 😉 I would have made today’s theme ‘Ice and Snow’ (which sound right) but I’m kinda planning on making S stand for Snow… so there’s that…

I took this one in my yard at some point… Great description, right? Even better I’ve titled it ‘Branchy’

I took this picture from a bridge looking down at the North Saskatchewan river as it was just beginning to freeze up. I don’t usually love abstract-y photographs, but this one I’m a fan of 😉

H is for HDR

I don’t do as much HDR as I’d like (my cameras don’t autobracket so I have to use a tripod to do it “right”) but I do enjoy playing with HDR when I can 🙂

This was the first HDR photograph I created that I liked and it’s still a favourite. The subject is a ‘blooming tea’. It took me a long time to find a composition I liked and by that time the tea had been steeping so long it was really dark, so I actually emptied it out and re-filled the cup with cold water LOL I love the fact that if you look closely at this picture you can totally see my entire kitchen in reflection 😉

I love the fact that this is a black and white photograph which is (accurately) entitled ‘Blue Bottles’. Because :-p

I took this photograph when I was on a writing retreat at Strawberry Creek Lodge. The experience was amazing and I think the photograph is magical:

I used glowsticks and long exposures to make the pictures below. It was a trial and error process that created a lot of failed photographs but it was a lot of fun where Jo and I got to play in the dark with glowsticks 🙂

Translated: Waste Not

My fun zombie tale, Waste Not, has been translated by Silver SÃ¤ra and published in the most recent issue of Algernon. This is my very first translated story and I think it’s pretty awesome that the language is Estonian. This publication is a fantastic way to start off my week. Check it out:

One of my favourite discoveries from this process came when I ran part of my story through Google translate. The phrase ‘Waste not, want not’ appears in my story, but when Google translated it back to English from Estonian it became “Waste not, then do not miss seeing” which I love. I think that will need to become a short story title at some point 😉

F is for flowers:

I took this one at the legislative grounds a couple years ago… I think.

For a while I was taking A LOT of daisy flowers because that year my garden was pretty much all daisies LOL This one was a zoomy long exposure I took at night. Just to see what would happen.

I was struck early in the morning by the idea for this shot and actually got out of bed, took it, then went back to bed LOL I don’t do mornings.

And I’m adding this photo of crab apple flowers just for good measure 😉

We went to the zoo a couple years ago and I left depressed for the animals… but with a few good photos. Like this one of Lucy:

Also, Jo bought me a macro lens for Mother’s Day a while back… I had fun playing with it, as you can see in these two similar shots:

This is Eowyn. She’s one of our kitties — the one who always freaking blinks when I try to take her picture, which makes this much more than ‘just another cat photo’:

Dani modeled for me out in the snow one warm wintery afternoon. This shot was both of our favourites from the day:

The conversation preceding this photograph went like this:

Me: Dani, I like the light in your room right now, how about you roll over so I can take your picture.
Dani: *rolls over*
Me: *takes picture* Thank you
Dani: You’re welcome. I’m going to go back to half-sleeping now.

Finally, I snapped this one in a parking lot when we were on vacation in Nova Scotia in 2012. It turned out to be one of my favourite shots from the whole trip:

I used to smoke about a pack a day. Quitting was possibly the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life and getting a dog was my reward for that. Tre is that dog.

A is also for Absinthe:

She doesn’t like posing for photographs as much as Tre does, so I have fewer of them.
