Tre

Atreyu “Tre” Parrish

March 2004 – May 2016

Last week we said goodbye to Tre. I chose not to share the news until now because my family and I needed some time to process and grieve in private before letting other people know.

Tre’s favourite things were walks, naps, carrots and ham. He also loved rolling in snow (or leaves), barking at the Bouvier des Flandres down the street and stealing my blankets and he hated it when Jo held a blanket up between the two of them, or if Eowyn (one of our cats) walked too close to his face. He was a bit of an asshole sometimes but he always tried to comfort me when he knew I was upset–up to and including the day he died.

He was a beloved part of our family and we miss him very much.

The Doge

Atreyu ParrishThis story has nothing to do with zombies or writing or any of that, but I’m sharing it anyway, because I want to 🙂 This post is about my dog, Atreyu. We call him Tre for short, and Danica often refers to him as The Doge (hence the title for this post).

Tre is eleven years old, and his favourite thing in the whole wide world is going for walks. His second favourite thing used to be when I would eat baby carrots. Anytime I had carrots out he would hang out with me and I’d share them with him. I thought it was pretty cute, eating carrots with my pooch (probably because it was) 🙂

A few months ago Tre was diagnosed with the early stages of kidney disease (to go along with his Cushings *sigh*). That meant special food to decrease his protein consumption, which also meant no more dog treats.

Tre is a stubborn little booger sometimes and one of the ways that manifests is when he’s outside. Occasionally he wouldn’t want to come in when he was called and he would totally ignore me whenever he felt like it — sometimes until I would go outside to get him myself (and when it’s -40 out, that doesn’t make me happy). Other times he’ll decide he wants in now. And by now, I mean now. He’d bark at the door incessantly for however long it took for me to get there and let him in.

I’d started giving him a treat (half of one actually LoL) every time he came in the first time I called or only barked once and then waited for me to open the door to let him in. It is a system that worked quite well for us and he was consistently listening when I called and not turning into a barking machine on the back step, but now, with his special diet, the Milkbones are no longer an option.

So I started giving him a baby carrot instead.*

Tre doesn’t even miss the Milkbones but now we have a new problem. He really likes carrots. I mean, he really likes them. He’s started coming in to get his baby carrot, eating it and then asking to go out again right away. Once he’s out, he wants to come back in to, you guessed it, get another carrot.

#facepalm

So… now we’re going to have to work out some new guidelines LOL What a brat!

*His vet says this is fine

S is for Snow

SThis year I’m participating in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge again. I thought it might be fun to share some of my photography instead of always my words. They say a picture is worth–well, you know what they say 😉

I will try to keep these blog posts short and sweet, while still offering a little bit of insight into each photograph, just for fun.

S is for Snow.

S has to be for snow. Not because I like snow (though I don’t *hate* it like I do ice and cold LoL) but because I have to deal with snow for more days of my life than I don’t. #goodtimes

Speaking of dealing with it… I don’t know if the shovel is a good enough object to have left there for scale, but it was all I had at the time:

When it’s not being a pain my back (though to be fair Jo shovels more often than I do LOL), snow can be quite pretty. Like in this shot looking down our street:

Or this shot of our backyard (interestingly, I took this picture in April LoL):

The only one around here who really loves snow, is the dog. You know how with some dogs, when you take them for a walk they need to stop and sniff every leaf on every tree? Tre is like that… but he also wants to roll around in every patch of snow. >_<

I used to smoke about a pack a day. Quitting was possibly the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life and getting a dog was my reward for that. Tre is that dog.

A is also for Absinthe:

She doesn’t like posing for photographs as much as Tre does, so I have fewer of them.

How I Work

Kittys At Work
~ Clicky clicky to make bigger ~

Any work I can do without the use of a computer is done on my bed. I know, I know it’s bad for me, it’s not good for posture, or brain training or whatever, whatever, whatever… but regardless it is how I work. One day, a few weeks ago, I stepped away from my work for a couple minutes and when I came back to it this was the sight that greeted me. Since this is actually fairly typical of my working conditions I couldn’t resist the urge to snap a picture to share.

Allow me to introduce Indiana, Absinthe and Eowyn. Atreyu, our dog, was at my feet when I shot this picture and that’s also usually where he is when I’m working too (on the computer or otherwise).

My life. It ain’t glamorous, but it sure is furry.
