Bedtime Story

Tesseracts 17Okay, this may seem a little braggy, but it came at a time I was feeling really low and totally made my week so I’m going to share it here. My Tesseracts tale, Bedtime Story, was Aaron Hughes’ story recommendation of the week over at Fantastic Reads!

Having friends enjoy your work is fantastic, but when a total stranger* reads your story and enjoys it enough to blog about it? That’s pretty freaking phenomenal!

I am so excite!

Yes, I said excite on purpose. Because.

:-p

*Aaron and I are Facebook friends now, but had no connection when this was posted.

Tesseracts Interview

Tesseracts 17Recently the amazing Ms. Colleen Anderson interviewed me about my story, “Bedtime Story” which appears in Tesseracts Seventeen: Speculating Canada from Coast to Coast.

I probably shouldn’t admit this but… I was playing World of Warcraft with some friends when I got Colleen’s email with the interview questions in it. I alt-tabbed from my game when I got the email notification and read them, then popped back into the game and wailed to my friends, “The questions she’s asking are smarter than I am! Or, at least, they assume I’m smarter than I am!”

I was so intimidated. You have no idea. It fell to poor BD to talk me down (the other friends aren’t writers so…). The thing was, once I got all my insecurities in hand, Colleen’s questions really made me think. Hard. Not just about “Bedtime Story” but about all my writing. Thinking that is sure to make my work stronger in the future, and for that I thank you Colleen.

(Did I mention she compared “Bedtime Story” to Peter Pan? ZOMG)

Tesseracts 17I am honored and proud beyond words that my story, “Bedtime Story”, is included in Tesseracts Seventeen: Speculating Canada From Coast to Coast. Having my work included in a Tesseracts anthology was totally a bucket list item for me, and you can bet that now that I’ve done it once, I very much want to do it again, and again, and again 🙂

I woke up one morning from an incredibly vivid and stylized dream and I quickly scribbled the words:

I was hiding in my parents’ closet with a friendly lamp who promised to stay the night with me, and Laura, a battle-scarred doll of my mother’s.”

I had so many ideas for this story based on that dream, ideas that involved dragons, witches, goblins and rats. It took me a very long time to mentally construct the story, cutting out several of the original elements until only the strongest remained. It took me even longer to be brave enough to put my pen to paper and start to write — I was totally intimidated by the story. I felt like it had the potential to be the best thing I’d written and I didn’t want to screw it up.

Once I finally did write it, it turned out I was right — it was the best story I’d written up until that time. I love it, and I hope you’ll pick up a copy of Tesseracts to check it out for yourself (not to mention all the incredible other authors who I’m sharing a table of contents with!).

In the meantime, Tesseracts Seventeen is officially being released today, and EDGE Publishing is having an online book launch for it. You can check it out here — Bitten By Books Online Launch of Tesseracts Seventeen and $50 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway. Over the next 24 hours or so all the contributors to Tesseracts Seventeen will be popping by to chat, answer questions and all that good stuff so consider popping over to see what’s going on. I was going to say you can also enter by using the Rafflecopter code below… but I’m not 100% sure that comments or questions left on my personal blog will count, so to be 100% safe, pop over to Bitten By Books and comment there. Despite the name, I’m pretty sure none of us will bite 🙂

Good luck winning that Gift Card, and also if you pop over, tell them I sent you. I think they are keeping track LOL

Accepted for Tesseracts 17!!!

tesseractToday is an emotional day for me. First of all, it should have been my Mom’s 56th birthday. I don’t think I need to dwell on how I feel about that in this post. I feel as you would imagine I do. Sad, angry, missing her… but, as difficult as it is to reconcile, today is also a very good day. Today I get to announce that my story, Bedtime Story, has been accepted for publication in Tesseracts 17: Speculating Canada from Coast to Coast to Coast.

Having a piece accepted for a Tesseracts anthology has been on my writerly bucket list for forever, and now I get to cross that one off. Mission accomplished! I feel fantastic about that, proud, humbled, encouraged… I am inspired to write and create, to keep pushing forward.

Bedtime Story is a piece that I really struggled with too, so I can’t think of a story more appropriate to be my first foray into the world of Tesseracts. It was inspired in part by a dream, so it’s a little different, a little weird, a little off, but it was also one of the first stories I wrote where I felt I’d successfully shown just the right amount and let my readers fill in the rest for themselves. My mother would have loved it. And she’d have been incredibly happy for me and proud of me for reaching one of my goals I’d worked toward for so long.

Today, though there is no way I’m going to be able to avoid being sad and missing her, I’m going to try very hard to focus on the good parts of the day too. It’s what she would have wanted.
